The Lucas Cave print
The Lucas is the cave that most people visit at Jenolan, in fact if you visited Jenolan on a school excursion, you probably visited the Lucas.

If you only have time to visit one cave, the Lucas is the best general cave, offering the visitor both the highest and widest chambers at Jenolan as well as a glimpse of the underground river. It is home to the most photographed formation at Jenolan, the Broken Column and displays a wide range of beautiful cave formations.

The highest chamber is the Cathedral (54 metres) , scene of many weddings and Concerts in the Caves.

The Cathedral Chamber has arguably the best acoustics of any performance space in the world. The acoustical properties of this chamber have been utilised by Dame Joan Sutherland and The Vienna Boys Choir.

Average inspection time: 1½ hour

  • Length: 860 metres
  • Number of stair steps: 910 (including 252 stair steps into the Cathedral Chamber)
  • Fitness level: harder  - Cave access involves several flights of stairs.  But once inside, the path becomes less strenuous and there are many rest stops, so you can enjoy the sights.
