Discover Our Secret to Success
|
From Corsets & Candlelight to Internet & iPhones
Challenging tourism's top contenders, we won gold at the Qantas Australia Tourism Awards, on Feb 7, 2014, raising our trophy count to 36 in 6 years.
150 years ago, fine gentlemen and corseted ladies viewed the vast caverns of Jenolan by candlelight. But now, tourism is no longer about sightseeing. Consumers demand interaction, technology, engagement, adventure and immersion in unique cultural experiences.
That is why we have won so many awards. We use imagination and technology to reinvent and refresh the way you experience Australia’s most spectacular (and the world’s oldest) caves. Highlighting our heritage and culture has proven to be one of our secrets to success. For full details, see our website. www.jenolancaves.org.au/gold-win-at-qantas-australia-tourism-awards/

Visit by the Chief Funster

Chief Funster of NSW - Andrew Smith
Andrew Smith has the best job in the world. Working for Tourism NSW, he travels throughout NSW as a social media commentator and professional party-goer.
He reviews the coolest gigs, parties and VIP events and helps to promote food festivals, lifestyle, sports, cultural, entertainment and arts events across the state.
On February 10, Andrew visited Jenolan Caves. Drumming around the mountains, the first thing he did was to set up his drum kit in the Grand Arch, to experience the thunderous acoustics. Then he and his wife, Rachel, spent 2 hours crawling, squeezing, abseiling and sliding into the heart of our limestone mountain, on our Plughole Adventure Tour!

Which is the Best Cave at Jenolan?
|
One of the World's Most Stunning Caves - The Orient
There are many caves at Jenolan. It's impossible to say which is the best one. But if overwhelming beauty is what you are seeking, then you should visit the Orient Cave.
The Orient Cave was discovered in 1904 and opened to the public in 1917. Visitors enter via the manmade tunnel - the Binoomea Cut. Visitors are guided up and down 358 stair steps, from 'Bat End', through a treasure trove of breathtaking crystal formations, passages and richly decorated caverns. The mind-boggling 'Persian Chamber' is arguably the most beautiful at Jenolan. The Orient Cave is said to be amongst the most stunning caves in the world.

Royal Stay at Caves House Hotel - 1927
In 1927, England's Prince Albert, Duke of York and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) stayed overnight at Caves House.
They arrived at Jenolan Caves for a night inspection of the Left Imperial Cave, now the Chifley. A broadcast of the Duke speaking from the cave was also scheduled. However, because of his stammer, he decided not to proceed with the broadcast.
Following their cave visit, the Duke and Duchess sat down to a splendid 15 course dinner, including such mouth watering choices as lobster neuberg, roast turkey St. James and rum omlette. A copy of the full menu, signed by their Royal Highnesses, hangs in the dining room of Caves House.

Last Weekend

Ragtime & Royalty was a Success!
Last Sunday, in conjunction with the Blue Mountains Roaring 20s Festival, we hosted a day of 'Ragtime & Royalty', to commemorate the royal visit of 1927.
There was a fascinating nostalgia tour of the Chifley Cave (previously called the 'Left Imperial').
Then, in the early afternoon, there was a 'Grand High Tea' in Chisolm's Restaurant. Some guests got into the spirit by dressing up in 1920s fashion. While they enjoyed the dainty sandwiches, scones and delicious sweets, they were entertained by the New Empire Ballroom Ragtime Dance Orchestra.
Afterwards, they were treated to a guided tour of Caves House, with a focus on its unique history. It was a fun, fascinating and frivolous day!
