Jenolan Caves House Hotel

5 Reasons Why You Should Stay Overnight.
To us, it seems like commonsense to stay at least one night at Jenolan. Here are some excellent reasons.
- Rest is essential for good health. Let's be honest - sometimes outings with kids are more tiring than going to work. An overnight stay is your well-earned recovery time, after a day of discovery.
- You have a long drive home. Don't risk nodding off behind the wheel or hitting wildlife.
- Provided you stay on the path, it's fun to bring torches and use our bush tracks to spot wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, platypus and other native animals that are more active in the evening! Also, we run evening cave tours from 8 to 10 pm. Afterwards, simply falling into bed is blissful!
- We offer accommodation for all budgets. Families like our cottages and backpacker lodge, which are economical and self-contained. But we also offer serviced family guestrooms in our motel and hotel.
- It is a unique experience to stay in our hotel, Jenolan Caves House. Built between 1897 and 1926, it still retains much of the elegance for which it was famous in the late Victorian era. It is on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Chisolm's Restaurant
|
Savour an Excellent Cool Climate Wine.
Part of the Jenolan magic is dinner in our magnificent Chisolm's Restaurant, upstairs in Caves House. Chisolm's features wines from NSW's Central West - mainly Orange, Oberon and Mudgee.
Central Tableland vineyards produce 'cool climate wines', which often show more herbaceous flavors than warm-climate wines and also more earthy or mineral-like character mixed in with the fruitiness.
This month, we shine the spotlight on Mortimers of Orange which has supplied our restaurant with delicious vintages for many years. At Chisolm's, Mortimers offers the following tempting cool climate wines:
- Chestnet Garth Sparkles, a 'bright sparkling wine with a crisp dry finish'
- Autumn Sauvignon Blanc, 'fresh and zesty with passion fruit aromas over a crisp palate of green apple and subtle asparagus'
- Cabernet Sauvignon, with 'mint and violet aromas over a red berry fruit mid palate'

FREE - Underground Church on Easter Sunday.
Maybe you've braved our ghost tour. Maybe you've abseiled deep into the bowels of the caves. Now try something really different - Underground Church! Dare to attend an Easter Church Service, in the Cathedral Chamber of the Lucas Cave. All are welcome to this FREE, non-denominational service on Easter Sunday at 9am.
Pre-book, arrive early and pick up your FREE ticket from the Guide's Office.
We hold church services twice a year only - at Easter and Christmas - organised by a group of dedicated Christians on Jenolan's staff.
Note that it is 252 steep stair steps to reach the Cathedral Chamber.
Once inside, you can sit, relax and hear the Easter message. After catching your breath, join in well-known Christian songs and enjoy a beautiful solo, in the acoustically perfect chamber. Our soloist will be Annelise Van den Elzen. www.jenolancaves.org.au/underground-church/?sdid=27

Water has Flooded the Crystal City!
Now that our drought is over, heavy rains have filled the delicate rim pools of 'The Crystal City' in the Imperial Cave - a rare occurrance.
The Crystal City is a large, amazing formation of crystal rim pools. It is a main feature of the Imperial Cave. In dry years, these shallow pools are beautiful but empty. But in heavy rain, water seeps into the cave, filling the pools. As the water overflows, calcium carbonate is caught on the rim, forming crystal and ensuring that the fragile walls continue to grow imperceptibly higher over the years. The water is very pure and still, so you can't see it in the image.
The Imperial Cave is a memorable experience for people of all ages, including children. There are 358 stair steps, but as the path is mostly level, broken by short sets of stairs, it is the best cave for less mobile or elderly visitors. We consider it our easiest tour - only 1 hour, but full of variety. www.jenolancaves.org.au/the-caves/show-cave-tours/imperial-cave/

Paranormal Activity
|
'Australia's Most Haunted' Stalks the Shadows of Jenolan Caves.
The film crew for 'Australia's Most Haunted' has paid us a 3rd visit, setting up sophisticated sound and imaging equipment in the caves and in our 'Caretakers Cottage'.
They revisited areas in the Imperial Cave, where they had detected ghostly voices on a previous visit. A wealth of EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) were recorded - voices, singing, footsteps, rusling of clothing, doors closing, etc. The recordings revealed the “hello” of a child and a very posh woman’s voice, in an English accent, saying “Chif…ley”. A voice said “she looks like Rachel”, referring to a film crew member. There were many children’s voices, some of them saying “help”. One said his name was “Thomas”.
They also visited one of our most 'haunted' locations, the 'Caretakers Cottage', almost hidden behind trees on the hill above our main car park. Usually occupied by staff (who have had some terrifying experiences) the cottage is not even part of our 'Legends, Mysteries & Ghosts' tour. We might have to rectify that!
On YouTube, you can view some of their Jenolan footage from 2012. We hope that the complete episode will air later this year. www.jenolancaves.org.au/the-caves/show-cave-tours/legends-mysteries-ghosts-tour/

CSIRO Innovation

3D Online Learning for the Future.
The CSIRO is bringing the future to the classroom with an online 3D immersive learning platform. They recently trialed their new imaging scanner at Jenolan Caves.
The CSIRO visited Jenolan recently, to trial a new aerial version of the Zebedee 3D imaging scanner. This was successfully flown in the Devil’s Coach House Cave and the Cathedral Chamber - possibly a world first.
It is hoped that the aerial scanner will be further refined and used to produce 3D modelling of cave chambers to a level of amazing detail. Computer scientists are working with science education experts from 3P Learning to develop immersive learning environments for their latest platform IntoScience, that will mirror real-life places, such as Jenolan Caves.
Find out more about this innovation.

Secrets of Our Success!
|
We're Still Celebrating our Gold National Award!
Challenging tourism's top contenders, we won gold at the Qantas Australia Tourism Awards, on Feb 7, 2014, raising our trophy count to 36 in 6 years.
150 years ago, fine gentlemen and corseted ladies viewed the vast caverns of Jenolan by candlelight. But now, tourism is no longer about sightseeing. Consumers demand interaction, technology, engagement, adventure and immersion in unique cultural experiences.
That is why we have won so many awards. We use imagination and technology to reinvent and refresh the way you experience Australia’s most spectacular (and the world’s oldest) caves. Highlighting our heritage and culture has proven to be one of our secrets to success. www.jenolancaves.org.au/gold-win-at-qantas-australia-tourism-awards/
