When you buy a ticket for one of our show cave tours, you get 50% discount on subsequent show cave tours at Jenolan - for up to a year. Even though this has been our price policy since 2006, some people still don't know about it!
For example, you pay the full price, $75, if you buy a family ticket for the Lucas Cave. With your ticket we also give you a 'Jenolan Pass'. So, when you want to do another show cave tour, you simply present your 'Jenolan Pass', and your tour will be half price. Over 55?

Benefits for Boomers - Far Out, Man!
Peace signs, kaftans, Dylan and Daddy Cool still linger among my favourite memories. If you can dig it, you may be over 55, like me. Groovy! That means you are eligible for discounts at Jenolan Caves. We offer six of our spectacular caves at Seniors Card and Age Pension rates. Far out!
Note that although most 'baby boomers' have no problem with stairs, some of our caves, such as the Imperial, have fewer stairs, so - no hassles!
Boomers know that technology is very, very cool. So when you get to Jenolan, remember to ask for a digital audio device (free with your show cave ticket), so you can do the self-guided tour. Or download our handy app (for iPhone or Android) at home before you get to Jenolan!
Remember to take advantage of all the freebies - bushwalks through the Grand Arch and Devil's Coach House Caves, or along the Blue Lake and Jenolan River - maybe spot native wildlife. You can also stroll around the charming public rooms of heritage-listed Caves House hotel and check out the paintings and photo collections.
Chill out with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea in our cafe. Enjoy great food in Chisolm's Restaurant, upstairs in Caves House. Stay overnight or longer. And remember - peace... man! www.jenolancaves.org.au/the-caves/a-note-for-seniors/

Spotlight on The Imperial Cave
|
Explore an Ancient Subterranean River Bed
During the time of Queen Victoria, it was fashionable for men to wear 'smoking' hats. In 1879 Jeremiah Wilson, our first cave guide, while peering into an abyss, lost his smoking hat. To retrieve it, he plunged into the primeval undiscovered darkness, and found not just his missing hat, but a new and wondrous cave, one thought fit for an emperor - the Imperial.
The first tour of the Imperial Cave took place soon after. The participants climbed over a tree branch spanning a large hole at the top of the mountain, shinnied down its trunk, slowly negotiated the Elder Cave, and eventually descended to the base of the Imperial Cave, all by candlelight!
Today, modern visitors take a much easier route to see the beautiful formations. In fact, the Imperial Cave is now Jenolan's 'easiest' cave, great especially if you are not as fit as you once were. As the Imperial Cave follows the route of an ancient river bed, it is mostly level, with short sets of stairs and plenty of rest stops. The tour runs for one hour only, making it a good cave to view if you are pressed for time.
Tickets for the Imperial Cave come at Adult, Seniors Card and Child/Age Pensioner rates. And, you also receive a Jenolan Pass, so that any subsequent show cave tours you do will be half price! Enjoy! www.jenolancaves.org.au/the-caves/show-cave-tours/imperial-cave/

Another Excuse to Stay at Caves House

Have You Seen the Paintings & Photo Collections in Caves House?
Next time you visit Jenolan, take the time to wander around the public rooms of Caves House - upstairs and downstairs - and view our collection of paintings and historic photos.
In 2008 and 2009, we ran an Artist in Residence program. Several well known Blue Mountains artists donated paintings produced during their time 'in residence'. The paintings are hanging in Caves House foyer, guest lounge and snooker room, for guests and visitors to view.
Jenolan Caves provided the inspiration for photography from the 1880s. Trying to capture the crystal features lit by early electricity and the flare of burning magnesium proved an irresistible challenge. You can see examples of these early photographs in the corridors of Caves House, along with exterior scenes of Caves House and the Jenolan District during the late 19th and early 20th Century. The Wilson and Whalan photo collections can be viewed on the second and third floor.

After Visiting Jenolan, See the Bathurst Fossil & Mineral Museum
When you leave Jenolan, what is your next stop? We have a really good suggestion.
In the heart of Bathurst, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum houses the internationally renowned and dazzling Somerville Collection - a huge display of the most astonishing mineral samples you have ever seen - some of the finest and rarest examples of minerals in the world. This is not just a collection of rocks - you have to see to believe!
The fossil collection includes a T.rex skeleton, Australia's largest collection of fossils in amber, fossil dinosaur eggs, some of the oldest fossils of early forms of life, and a large collection of Australia's unique opalised fossils.
Close to 2,000 fossil and mineral specimens are displayed in two main exhibitions. There is also a temporary exhibition space which has a changing program and a museum shop with a wide variety of dinosaur, Earth history and science products.

Jenolan's Resident Platypus Family
|
Where Can You Watch Wild Platypus Any Day of the Week?
At Jenolan, in the Blue Lake, you can spot platypus, living in the wild, any day of the week. Although platypus are nocturnal, they appear during the day at Jenolan, often enough to be a treat for patient (and quiet) visitors.
The platypus is one of the most unusual creatures in the animal kingdom. They are a species of primitive mammals called monotremes, which lay eggs yet suckle their young when they hatch.
Platypus are carnivorous, eating aquatic insects and freshwater shrimps, snails, pea shell mussels, seed-shrimps, water mites and worms, crayfish and fish eggs. Platypuses can consume their own body weight in food in a 24 hour period! The surface of a platypus bill is thickly dotted with acutely sensitive electro-receptors, which respond to the tiny amount of electricity generated by its prey. Because electricity moves so rapidly through water, the tail flick of a shrimp is instantly detected by a platypus' electro-receptors, enabling it to judge the distance to their prey.
Platypus dive to the bottom of the water and uses their bill to detect and seize prey. The platypus stores food in cheek pouches at the back of its jaw. It returns to the surface when its oxygen supply runs low (usually within 30-60 seconds) and then spends about 10-20 seconds chewing and swallowing food before again diving.
Finally, although adorable, the male platypus has venom strong enough to kill a small dog, or cause excruciating pain among humans.
